The United States has cut $377 million in funding to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), affecting maternal healthcare, violence protection, and rape treatment in humanitarian crises. Nearly all 48 grants from USAID and the US State Department to UNFPA have now been terminated.
Impact on Humanitarian Aid
The funding supported lifesaving care for women and girls in Gaza, Sudan, Ukraine, and other crisis-hit regions. Programs in Afghanistan, Chad, DRC, Haiti, Mali, Syria, and neighboring countries will also be affected.
UNFPA warned that the cuts will have devastating consequences for health workers and vulnerable women in some of the world’s worst humanitarian situations.
US-UNFPA Funding History
The US has defunded UNFPA multiple times, citing accusations of coercive abortion and forced sterilization, claims refuted by independent investigations and past US administrations.
This latest cut follows other US funding reductions to humanitarian agencies since January, leaving millions at risk.
About UNFPA
Founded in 1969, UNFPA focuses on reproductive health, maternal care, and gender-based violence prevention, supporting the rights of parents to decide family size and spacing.
