Union Minister of State for Railways and Jal Shakti, V. Somanna, announced a record ₹10,440 crore allocation for railway development in Northeast India under the Union Budget 2025-26. During his visit to Guwahati Railway Station, he reviewed ongoing projects and highlighted key developments.
100% Railway Electrification by 2025
Somanna stated that Assam had no railway electrification before 2014, but full electrification will be completed by the end of 2025. He also emphasized accelerated doubling of railway tracks to boost capacity and efficiency.
Modernization & New Railway Lines
The Minister stressed the need to modernize railway stations for better passenger facilities. Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), Guwahati Railway Station is being redeveloped at a cost of ₹181.09 crore with modern amenities, waiting halls, QR code ticketing counters, and enhanced security.

- New railway lines are being built to improve connectivity across the Northeast.
- Dibrugarh Railway Station is undergoing redevelopment under the ABSS scheme.
