The Assam government has honored Bharat Kalita, a dairy farmer and president of Kamdhenu Dugdha Utpadak Samabay Samiti, with the Assam Gaurav Award for his role in the state’s milk revolution.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the award on March 9, recognizing Kalita’s contribution to Assam’s dairy sector, comparing him to Verghese Kurien, the father of India’s White Revolution.
Transforming Assam’s Dairy Industry
Kalita’s dairy cooperative, affiliated with Purabi Dairy under West Assam Milk Producers’ Co-operative Union Ltd (WAMUL), has grown from collecting 70 liters of milk in 2007 to supplying 4,500-7,000 liters daily.
Last year, the cooperative won the National Gopal Ratna Award for Best Dairy Cooperative Society in the Special NER category, awarded by the central government.
Leaders Praise Kalita’s Contributions
Kalita expressed gratitude to the Assam government and Purabi Dairy, crediting them for Assam’s dairy revolution.
NDDB Chairman Meenesh Shah and WAMUL Managing Director Sameer Kumar Parida praised Kalita for empowering farmers and enhancing milk production, while NEDFL Managing Director Satya Brata Bose called him a driving force in cooperative dairy farming.
With Purabi Dairy leading the dairy movement, Kalita’s efforts continue to support farmers and strengthen Assam’s dairy industry.
