United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has announced the UN80 Initiative, a reform plan aimed at modernizing the 80-year-old UN to improve efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and responsiveness.
The initiative builds on existing efforts like the Pact for the Future and UN 2.0, ensuring that the UN remains relevant in the 21st century. A Task Force led by Under-Secretary-General Guy Ryder will focus on:
- Enhancing efficiency in operations.
- Reviewing mandate implementations from Member States.
- Strategic restructuring to improve programs and services.
Guterres emphasized that the reforms aim to deliver tangible improvements in peace, development, and humanitarian aid, while ensuring transparent use of public funds. He assured regular consultations with Member States and updates under the leadership of the UN General Assembly President.
