Students at PM Shri Adarsh Vidyalayas in Assam will soon learn maths and science in local languages using virtual reality (VR), thanks to a groundbreaking initiative by IIT Guwahati. The institute is developing India’s first VR-enabled metaverse platform for schools, named “Gyandhara”, in collaboration with the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Assam Education Department.

Transforming Education with VR

Launching as a pilot project in 56 schools later this year, Gyandhara aims to make learning more interactive and engaging. The platform will cover maths, science, and social science for students in classes 8 to 12, replacing traditional teaching methods with 3D immersive experiences.

Dr. Keyur Sorathia, Associate Professor at IIT Guwahati, explained that the metaverse will help students visualize complex topics, develop critical thinking skills, and collaborate globally.

“Education should be exciting and rewarding. Through Gyandhara, we aim to empower students with immersive learning experiences in their local languages, making difficult subjects easier to understand,” Sorathia said.

Nationwide Expansion Planned

Following its pilot phase in Assam, the project will expand across the Northeast and eventually the entire country. This first-of-its-kind initiative in India could revolutionize school education, making subjects more accessible and engaging for students.
