The dairy and organic farming sectors in Assam received a major push with the signing of two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) at Advantage Assam 2.0. These agreements aim to expand milk processing, introduce organic farming innovations, and train farmers across the state.
Dairy Expansion at Purabi Dairy
The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and West Assam Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Limited (WAMUL) signed an MoU to double the milk processing capacity at Purabi Dairy’s Panjabari plant in Guwahati from 1.5 lakh liters per day (LLPD) to 3 LLPD. The ₹100 crore expansion will also:
- Increase production of fermented dairy products like yogurt, cheese, and buttermilk from 20 metric tons per day (MTPD) to 50 MTPD.
- Establish a new ice cream plant with a 20,000 liters per day (TLPD) capacity.
- Strengthen the supply chain and provide better returns for dairy farmers.
The agreement was signed in the presence of Assam Ministers Jogen Mohan and Pijush Hazarika, along with government officials and industry leaders.
Organic Farming & Farmer Training
In another key development, National Cooperative Organics Limited (NCOL) and North East Dairy and Foods Limited (NEDFL) partnered to set up an Organic Demo Farm cum Food Innovation Hub in Assam. This hub will:
- Process organic raw materials for better marketability.
- Provide a demonstration farm to teach best organic farming practices.
- Train 1,000 farmers in organic techniques over the next two years.
The project is backed by the Union Ministry of Cooperation and aims to bridge knowledge gaps in organic farming while promoting sustainable agriculture.
These initiatives are expected to strengthen Assam’s agricultural sector, improve farmer incomes, and boost the availability of high-quality dairy and organic products in the region.
