Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia inaugurated Assam’s third 5G laboratory at Gauhati University on February 25, 2025, marking a major step in technology and education. Set up under the “Advantage Assam 2.0” initiative, this state-of-the-art lab will drive research in high-speed communication, AI, and cybersecurity, while also supporting the Assam Police Cyberdome Project to strengthen digital security.
Advancing Research and Skill Development
The lab, developed with Amantya Technologies, features a 5G core network, radio access networks (RAN), and edge computing tools, enabling students and researchers to explore IoT applications, smart healthcare, and autonomous drones. It aims to help Assam shift from an “employee-driven” to an “innovator-led” economy.
With flexible research packages, the lab provides opportunities for experimentation in low-bandwidth IoT applications to high-speed industrial automation, ensuring Assam’s youth are at the forefront of 5G-driven innovations.
Bridging the Digital Divide
The lab’s research will complement the upcoming hyperscale data centers in Assam, helping improve AI-driven governance, agriculture, and healthcare. By focusing on edge computing, the lab will enhance rural connectivity, making services like telemedicine and precision farming more accessible.
Strengthening Cybersecurity with 5G
The Cyberdome Project, launched by Assam Police in 2018, aims to combat cyber threats such as financial fraud and digital crimes. The new 5G lab will enhance real-time threat detection, digital forensics, and AI-driven security analytics, making Assam’s digital landscape safer and more resilient.
A New Era for Assam’s Digital Future
The Gauhati University 5G lab is set to become a hub for innovation, research, and cybersecurity, strengthening Assam’s position as a tech leader in India’s Northeast. By bridging education and digital governance, it paves the way for a more connected and secure future.
