The Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) has proposed an increase in electricity tariffs, despite the state government’s plan to reduce tariffs by Re 1 per unit in the upcoming financial year. The proposal was submitted to the Assam Electricity Regulatory Commission (AERC), which recently held a public hearing to gather feedback.
Public Hearing and Stakeholder Opinions
Representatives from ten organizations participated in the hearing, expressing concerns over how the proposed hike would affect consumers and the overall energy sector. The AERC will review the feedback before making a final decision on electricity tariffs for 2025-26. The recommendations are expected by the end of the current financial year.
State Government’s Subsidy Plan
Finance Minister Ajanta Neog announced in the 2025-26 state budget that the government will provide a subsidy of Re 1 per unit, effective May 1, 2025. This ₹300 crore subsidy aims to benefit 48 lakh consumers, particularly those using up to 120 units per month, to ensure affordable electricity for lower and middle-income households.
The final decision on the tariff revision will depend on AERC’s review and the government’s subsidy plan, balancing consumer relief with the financial needs of APDCL.
