The Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd (APDCL) has set a target to generate 750 MW of solar power by 2026-27 with financial support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Renewable Energy and Thermal Power Initiatives

APDCL has also secured a 500 MW coal linkage under the SHAKTI Policy, 2017, from Coal India Limited and has completed the Request for Qualification (RFQ) stage for procuring 500 MW of thermal power. The Request for Proposal (RFP) process will begin soon.

Additionally, APDCL is procuring 100 MW of wind-solar hybrid power from NTPC at Rs 3.43/unit, which has received Cabinet approval. Another 200 MW power purchase agreement is in progress with THDC India Limited, set to begin in FY 2031-32.

Major Solar Project Underway

Construction is already in progress for a 320 MW solar power project by SJVNL (L1), marking a major milestone in Assam’s shift towards renewable energy.

Rising Power Demand
APDCL reported that maximum power demand in FY 2024-25 reached 2,684 MW (as of September 2024), an 11.23% increase from the previous year. The state’s projected power demand for 2025-26 is expected to rise to 2,950 MW.

With these initiatives, Assam is taking significant steps toward enhancing its renewable energy capacity and meeting its growing power needs.
